Leviathan Awakes (The Expanse Book 1) - James Corey - $2.99 [ amazon.com ]
4.5 stars in 1,851 reviews

The first book in the landmark Expanse series, now a major television series from Syfy!

Leviathan Wakes is James S. A. Corey's first novel in the epic, New York Times bestselling series the Expanse, a modern masterwork of science fiction where humanity has colonized the solar system.

Two hundred years after migrating into space, mankind is in turmoil. When a reluctant ship's captain and washed-up detective find themselves involved in the case of a missing girl, what they discover brings our solar system to the brink of civil war, and exposes the greatest conspiracy in human history.

The Fifth Season (Broken Earth Book 1) - N.K. Jemisin - $2.99 [ amazon.com ]
4.4 stars in 864 reviews

"Intricate and extraordinary."―The New York Times

"[The Fifth Season is] an ambitious book, with a shifting point of view, and a protagonist whose full complexity doesn't become apparent till toward the end of the novel. ... Jemisin's work itself is part of a slow but definite change in sci-fi and fantasy."―Guardian

"Astounding... Jemisin maintains a gripping voice and an emotional core that not only carries the story through its complicated setting, but sets things up for even more staggering revelations to come."―NPR Books

"Jemisin's graceful prose and gritty setting provide the perfect backdrop for this fascinating tale of determined characters fighting to save a doomed world."―Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)

"A must-buy...breaks uncharted ground."―Library Journal (starred review)

"Jemisin might just be the best world builder out there right now.... [She] is a master at what she does."―RT Book Reviews (Top Pick!)

"The Fifth Season is a powerful, epic novel of discovery, pain, and heartbreak.... It is a novel that demands much of its readers; it rewards them aplenty and is one of those novels that becomes more powerful after deep consideration and subsequent readings."―SFF World

"This is an intense, exciting novel, where survival is always on the line, set in a fascinating, original and dangerous world with an intriguing mystery at the heart of it. I can't wait to see what happens in the next book!"―Martha Wells

"Brilliant...gorgeous writing and unexpected plot twists."―Washington Post

"[A]ngrily, beautifully apocalyptic."―B&N.com

Ancillary Justice (Imperial Radch Book 1) by Ann Leckie - $2.99
[ amazon.com ]
4.1 stars in 1,266 reviews

The only novel ever to win the Hugo, Nebula, and Arthur C. Clarke Awards and the first book in Ann Leckie's New York Times bestselling trilogy.

"If you don't know the Ancillary series by now, you probably should. Ann Leckie's sociopolitical space opera almost singlehandedly breathed new cool into the stereotype of spaceships trundling through far-off systems amid laser battles. ... [Ancillary Mercy] earns the credit it's received: As a capstone to a series that shook genre expectations, as our closing installment of an immersively realized world, and as the poignant story of a ship that learned to sing."―NPR Books on Ancillary Mercy

"Powerful."―The New York Times on Ancillary Sword

"Unexpected, compelling and very cool. Ann Leckie nails it...I've never met a heroine like Breq before. I consider this a very good thing indeed."―John Scalzi

"Ancillary Justice is the mind-blowing space opera you've been needing...This is a novel that will thrill you like the page-turner it is, but stick with you for a long time afterward."―i09.com (included in 'This Fall's Must-Read Science Fiction and Fantasy Books')

"It's not every day a debut novel by an author you'd never heard of before derails your entire afternoon with its brilliance. But when my review copy of Ancillary Justice arrived, that's exactly what it did. In fact, it arrowed upward to reach a pretty high position on my list of best space opera novels ever."―Liz Bourke, Tor.com

"A double-threaded narrative proves seductive, drawing the reader into the naive but determined protagonist's efforts to transform an unjust universe. Leckie uses...an expansionist galaxy-spinning empire [and] a protagonist on a single-minded quest for justice to transcend space-opera conventions in innovative ways. This impressive debut succeeds in making Breq a protagonist readers will invest in, and establishes Leckie as a talent to watch."―Publishers Weekly

"By turns thrilling, moving and awe-inspiring."―The Guardian

"Leckie does a very good job of setting this complex equation up... This is an altogether promising debut."―Kirkus

"Using the format of SF military adventure blended with hints of space opera, Leckie explores the expanded meaning of human nature and the uneasy balance between individuality and membership in a group identity. Leckie is a newcomer to watch as she expands on the history and future of her new and exciting universe."―Library Journal

"Leckie's debut gives casual and hardcore sci-fi fans alike a wonderful read."―RT Book Reviews

The Boy on the Bridge - M. R. Carey - $2.99
[ amazon.com ]
4.4 stars in 159 reviews

From the author of USA Today bestseller The Girl With All the Gifts, a terrifying new novel set in the same post-apocalyptic world.

"Carey writes with compassion and fire - strange and surprising and humane"―Lauren Beukes, author of The Shining Girls

"A terrifying, emotional page-turner that explores what it means to be human."―Kirkus

"Thoughtful and compelling"―RT Book Reviews

"A tense story with superbly rendered characters and the same blend of tragedy and hope."―SciFiNow

"[A] brilliant character study as much as a tense, satisfying post-apocalyptic thriller."―B&N Sci-Fi & Fantasy Blog

"The Boy on the Bridge is a careful companion, including thematic parallels that remind us, in sometimes horrific ways, that our actions always have wider consequences than we think."―NPR

"The stakes are higher than ever...action-packed...Fans of Carey and readers of Ben H. Winters or Steven Barnes will enjoy."―Library Journal

The Shadow of What Was Lost (The Licanius Trilogy) by James Islington - $2.99
[ amazon.com ]
4.3 stars in 855 reviews

"Love The Wheel of Time? This is about to become your new favorite series." - B&N SF & Fantasy Blog

"Storytelling assurance rare for a debut . . . Fans of Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson will find much to admire." - Guardian

"Islington has built a world with all the right genre elements: complex magic, terrifying threats out of legend, political intrigue, and a large cast of characters whose motivations are seldom clear. Fans of doorstop epic fantasy will not be disappointed." - Publishers Weekly

"Ingeniously plotted...Islington's natural storytelling ability provides incessant plot twists and maintains a relentless pace...A promising page-turner from a poised newcomer." - Kirkus

It has been twenty years since the god-like Augurs were overthrown and killed. Now, those who once served them - the Gifted - are spared only because they have accepted the rebellion's Four Tenets, vastly limiting their powers.

As a Gifted, Davian suffers the consequences of a war lost before he was even born. He and others like him are despised. But when Davian discovers he wields the forbidden power of the Augurs, he sets into motion a chain of events that will change everything.

To the west, a young man whose fate is intertwined with Davian's wakes up in the forest, covered in blood and with no memory of who he is...

And in the far north, an ancient enemy long thought defeated begins to stir.

Not sure how long this will last, but this newly released (Dec 17) book by Charles Platt has dropped 65% in the past few days. I had it in my cart as I was going to buy it for my nephew as this looks perfect for a 10 year old and it was 9.99 until I checked today and got the price dropped notice in my Amazon Cart.

It is still $7.19 for the Kindle version, so for some reason they are blowing out the paperback. Also CamelCamelCamel has no pricing update (weird) for it and still shows it at $9.99 so I am not sure if it may be a error, but it just looks like a big price drop right now.

Everywhere else I see is still selling at $9.99 (or more) including Barnes & Noble

https://www.amazon.com/Easy-Elect...1680454 48X

Only has 3 reviews so far at 3.3 stars, but it looks like they may not of known it is a short 56 page book meant as a intro.

Looked like it is a pretty slickdeal share if anyone else has a young one that may be interested in electronics.

This kindle ebook just dropped in price from $7.91 to $2.99 (+tax). I'm not sure how long this deal will last. It was made into a movie in 2012 starring Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, and Jim Broadbent.

description from Amazon:

By the New York Times bestselling author of The Bone Clocks | Shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize | Includes a new Afterword by David Mitchell

A postmodern visionary and one of the leading voices in twenty-first-century fiction, David Mitchell combines flat-out adventure, a Nabokovian love of puzzles, a keen eye for character, and a taste for mind-bending, philosophical and scientific speculation in the tradition of Umberto Eco, Haruki Murakami, and Philip K. Dick. The result is brilliantly original fiction as profound as it is playful. In this groundbreaking novel, an influential favorite among a new generation of writers, Mitchell explores with daring artistry fundamental questions of reality and identity.

Cloud Atlas begins in 1850 with Adam Ewing, an American notary voyaging from the Chatham Isles to his home in California. Along the way, Ewing is befriended by a physician, Dr. Goose, who begins to treat him for a rare species of brain parasite. . . . Abruptly, the action jumps to Belgium in 1931, where Robert Frobisher, a disinherited bisexual composer, contrives his way into the household of an infirm maestro who has a beguiling wife and a nubile daughter. . . . From there we jump to the West Coast in the 1970s and a troubled reporter named Luisa Rey, who stumbles upon a web of corporate greed and murder that threatens to claim her life. . . . And onward, with dazzling virtuosity, to an inglorious present-day England; to a Korean superstate of the near future where neocapitalism has run amok; and, finally, to a postapocalyptic Iron Age Hawaii in the last days of history.

But the story doesn't end even there. The narrative then boomerangs back through centuries and space, returning by the same route, in reverse, to its starting point. Along the way, Mitchell reveals how his disparate characters connect, how their fates intertwine, and how their souls drift across time like clouds across the sky.

As wild as a videogame, as mysterious as a Zen koan, Cloud Atlas is an unforgettable tour de force that, like its incomparable author, has transcended its cult classic status to become a worldwide phenomenon.

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The official novelization of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the blockbuster film directed by J. J. Abrams • Includes two tie-in short stories: "The Perfect Weapon" by Delilah S. Dawson and "Bait" by Alan Dean Foster

More than thirty years ago, Star Wars burst onto the big screen and became a cultural phenomenon. Now the next adventures in this blockbuster saga are poised to captivate old and new fans alike—beginning with the highly anticipated Star Wars: The Force Awakens. And alongside the cinematic debut comes the thrilling novel adaptation by New York Times bestselling science fiction master Alan Dean Foster.

Set years after Return of the Jedi, this stunning new action-packed adventure rockets us back into the world of Princess Leia, Han Solo, Chewbacca, C-3PO, R2-D2, and Luke Skywalker, while introducing a host of exciting new characters. Darth Vader may have been redeemed and the Emperor vanquished, but peace can be fleeting, and evil does not easily relent. Yet the simple belief in good can still empower ordinary individuals to rise and meet the greatest challenges.

So return to that galaxy far, far away, and prepare yourself for what happens when the Force awakens. . . .

Praise for Star Wars: The Force Awakens

"Like all the best novelizations, Alan Dean Foster's adaptation of Star Wars: The Force Awakens enriches the movie experience. The novel goes beyond simply giving us insight into the characters' thoughts, with plenty of additional scenes painting a broader picture of the galaxy."—New York Daily News

"Fast-moving, atmospheric and raises goose-bumps at just the right moments. [Foster] not only evokes entire onscreen worlds . . . he also gives us glimpses of an even more vast, unseen universe."—The Washington Post

It's time to enlighten your load.

I have been eyeing this science fiction novel for the past month after reading a review of it. A few days ago the kindle version was only a few dollar cheaper than the physical book version, but they dropped the price. If you are into robots story you might want to check it out for just two bucks. I don't know how long this price will last before it jumps back to about $15.

"A scavenger robot wanders in the wasteland created by a war that has destroyed humanity in this evocative post-apocalyptic "robot western" from the critically acclaimed author, screenwriter, and noted film critic.

It's been thirty years since the apocalypse and fifteen years since the murder of the last human being at the hands of robots. Humankind is extinct. Every man, woman, and child has been liquidated by a global uprising devised by the very machines humans designed and built to serve them. Most of the world is controlled by an OWI—One World Intelligence—the shared consciousness of millions of robots, uploaded into one huge mainframe brain. But not all robots are willing to cede their individuality—their personality—for the sake of a greater, stronger, higher power. These intrepid resisters are outcasts; solo machines wandering among various underground outposts who have formed into an unruly civilization of rogue AIs in the wasteland that was once our world.

One of these resisters is Brittle, a scavenger robot trying to keep a deteriorating mind and body functional in a world that has lost all meaning. Although unable to experience emotions like a human, Brittle is haunted by the terrible crimes the robot population perpetrated on humanity. As Brittle roams the Sea of Rust, a large swath of territory that was once the Midwest, the loner robot slowly comes to terms with horrifyingly raw and vivid memories—and nearly unbearable guilt.

Sea of Rust is both a harsh story of survival and an optimistic adventure. A vividly imagined portrayal of ultimate destruction and desperate tenacity, it boldly imagines a future in which no hope remains, yet where a humanlike AI strives to find purpose among the ruins.

Amazon currently has The Complete Maus (Hardcover) by Art Spiegelman for $13.57 (FS w/ Prime):

Lowest price ever per CCC (same as this past holiday). Excellent graphic novel with superb reviews everywhere. One of my favorite books. Enjoy!

Book overview:
Quote :
The Pulitzer Prize-winning Maus tells the story of Vladek Spiegelman, a Jewish survivor of Hitler's Europe, and his son, a cartoonist coming to terms with his father's story. Mausapproaches the unspeakable through the diminutive. Its form, the cartoon (the Nazis are cats, the Jews mice), shocks us out of any lingering sense of familiarity and succeeds in "drawing us closer to the bleak heart of the Holocaust" (The New York Times).

Maus is a haunting tale within a tale. Vladek's harrowing story of survival is woven into the author's account of his tortured relationship with his aging father. Against the backdrop of guilt brought by survival, they stage a normal life of small arguments and unhappy visits. This astonishing retelling of our century's grisliest news is a story of survival, not only of Vladek but of the children who survive even the survivors. Maus studies the bloody pawprints of history and tracks its meaning for all of us.

Amazon has Lock In: A Novel of the Near Future [ amazon.com ] by John Scalzi for $2.99

I listened to Amber Besson's narration back in 2016 and it was decent. The novel is written from a perspective that could be male or female. Wil Wheaton did it from the male perspective (he does most of Scalzi's narration). If you are going to add Narration, you should decide which you want and get the matching audiobook from Audible, rather than adding it to the order. I'm not sure which one it picks.

Lock-In is a Sci-Fi police procedural with a unique premise. Basically a virus goes through the world and a small percentage of people are suffer from "Lock In" where their mind is fully functional, but their body cannot move. This brings about a variety of new industries to deal with the fallout.

Check it out for $2.99, the lowest price it has ever been. I've seen it periodically for this price.

Amazon and Google Play have the ebook version of New Spring: The Wheel of Time Book 0 by Robert Jordan for $2.99. I've never seen this on sale before

https://play.google.com/store/boo...SagN7EtoU C

4.2 stars in 631 reviews

Since its debut in 1990, The Wheel of Time® by Robert Jordan has captivated millions of readers around the globe with its scope, originality, and compelling characters.

The Wheel of Time turns and Ages come and go, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth returns again. In the Third Age, an Age of Prophecy, the World and Time themselves hang in the balance. What was, what will be, and what is, may yet fall under the Shadow.

For three days battle has raged in the snow around the great city of Tar Valon. In the city, a Foretelling of the future is uttered. On the slopes of Dragonmount, the immense mountain that looms over the city, is born an infant prophesied to change the world. That child must be found before the forces of the Shadow have an opportunity to kill him.
Moiraine Damodred, a young Accepted soon to be raised to Aes Sedai, and Lan Mandragoran, a soldier fighting in the battle, are set on paths that will bind their lives together. But those paths are filled with complications and dangers, for Moiraine, of the Royal House of Cairhien, whose king has just died, and Lan, considered the uncrowned king of a nation long dead, find their lives threatened by the plots of those seeking power.

"New Spring" related some of these events, in compressed form; New Spring: The Novel tells the whole story.

Amazon has the Kindle version of Alton Brown's I'm Just Here for the Food: Version 2.0: The Director's Cut on sale for $2.99. Sold directly by Amazon so No-Rush shippin g credits DO apply

4.7 stars in 456 reviews

In 1998 Alton Brown set out to create a cooking show for a new generation. The result was Good Eats, one of Food Network's most popular programs. In 2002, Brown set out to write a cookbook for people who would rather understand their food than follow a recipe. A mix of cutting-edge graphics and a fresh take on preparing food, I'm Just Here For the Food became one of the bestselling cookbooks of the year--and received the James Beard Foundation/KitchenAid Book Award as best reference book.

In 2006, to commemorate and celebrate this success story (more than 300,000 copies in print), STC is pleased to announce I'm Just Here For the Food: Version 2.0. This special edition features 15 brand-new recipes and 20 pages of additional material--along with everything that made the original a classic instruction manual for the kitchen. Each of the book's 15 sections is a module on a given cooking method--from pan searing to pressure cooking, stewing to steaming—with a "master" recipe and a varied selection of recipes that epitomize the technique. The text is accented throughout with food facts, history and lore, and science.

Amazon has the Kindle edition of The Retreat of Western Liberalism by Edward Luce on sale for $1.89. Sold by Amazon so No-Rush Shipping credits do apply

Just purchased a copy for ourseles as the review blurbs look fascinating.

One of the Washington Post 's 50 notable works of nonfiction in 2017, an Amazon Top 100 book of the year, and a Financial Times and Economist best book of the year

"Timely and informed, providing an important overview of the dynamics in an increasingly interconnected and fragmented planet . . . In his prescient 2012 book, Time to Start Thinking: America in the Age of Descent , Luce uncannily anticipated the politics of resentment and the bitter fights over immigration that would fuel 'Brexit' and last year's American election. And in this new book, he lucidly expounds on the erosion of the West's middle classes, the dysfunction among its political and economic elites and the consequences for America and the world." ―Michiko Kakutani, New York Times

"Many around the globe sense a systemic crisis. To understand the nature of this crisis, we could not find a better guide than Edward Luce's The Retreat of Western Liberalism . . . Luce writes in fluid prose, moving from a telling statistic to a striking quotation. Throughout, one is struck by his command of the material and the activity of his prose―he is unsparing in his condemnation of the elites who didn't see this coming." ―Fareed Zakaria, New York Times Book Review

"Mr. Luce offers a useful wake-up call to elites, urging them to focus on the very real struggles of America's besieged middle class before we all lose the freedom and democracy we cherish . . . [A] concise, accessible and valuable work." ―Lawrence J. Haas, Wall Street Journal

"What the book offers is . . . a panorama of the unravelling world order as riveting as any beach read. Luce's project is to explain what the recent dark turn in Western politics―the rise of ultranationalism, populist demagoguery, cultural insularity, and social unrest―has to do with global economics. It's a story of trade balances and technological disruption, but also a withering dismantling of Western liberalism's faith in progress." ―Elias Muhanna, New Yorker , "What we're reading this summer"

"A brisk, timely survey . . . Mr. Luce is a shrewd observer . . . At rapid pace and with telling statistics, Mr. Luce . . . gives a knowledgeable tour through the unmapped terrain in which Western politicians and governments must now operate." Economist

"Edward Luce provides a terrifying view of the challenges facing the West. We have to hope that his prophecies are self denying―something that is more likely if his penetrating analysis gets the wide attention it richly deserves." ―Lawrence Summers

"Read this book: In the three hours it takes you will get a new, bracing, and brilliant understanding of the dangers we in the democratic West now face. Luce is one of the smartest journalists working today, and his perceptions are priceless." ―Jane Mayer, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Dark Money

"The challenges to the West are outlined in detail―and they mainly come from within . . . For Luce, the combination of rising income inequality, vanishing economic mobility and distant technocracy has led to our moment's populist resurgence." ―Carlos Lozada, Washington Post

"A head-clearing attempt to explore the underlying disorder and distemper in liberal democracy, in America and throughout the West . . . As this author states repeatedly, Trump is merely a symptom, not a cause, of this disorder. For readers looking for context, this primer is a good start." ―Carla Seaquist, Huffington Post

"An informative look at the current state of world politics and economics . . . It's also a thought-provoking warning that history is not guaranteed." ―Chris Schluep, Omnivoracious

"Important . . . Through his deep reporting and clear-headed analysis, Luce explains popular frustration with liberalism, and the resurgence of nationalism." National Book Review , "5 hot books"

"No one was more prescient about the economic malaise and popular resentment that has hit the United States than Edward Luce in his previous book, Time to Start Thinking . His new book, The Retreat of Western Liberalism , broadens that picture to cover the Western world. It is a must read for anyone trying to make sense of the waves of populism and nationalism we face today." ―Liaquat Ahamed, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Lords of Finance

"Luce's well-crafted book locates the origin of the crisis in declining economic opportunities available to Western middle classes." ―G. John Ikenberry, Foreign Affairs

"[ The Retreat of Western Liberalism ] is really, really important . . . We strongly encourage you to buy it." ―David Rothkopf, Foreign Policy 's The E.R. podcast

"Luce does a masterful job of describing the contours of the rise of illiberal democracy in the west." ―Benjamin Knoll, New York Journal of Books

"Beautifully written." Times (UK)

"The great merit of Luce's brisk, pointed and fascinating book . . . is that it is far more than a disappointed liberal's angry tirade. His achievement it to put the rise of antiestablishment populism in a broader global economic context . . . In particular, he is memorably and rightly scathing about the self-regard of the Davos elite." Literary Review (UK)

"Timely . . . [Luce's] writing has a vigour and sweep all too absent in the deadly prose of social scientists." Financial Times (UK)

"A succinct and powerful accounting of the global failure of the political left and the subsequent revolt of the people against a system that they see, not without reason, as having failed and abandoned them." Toronto Star

"Incisive . . . Luce combines some hard, and unsettling, facts about the 'stagnant' state of Western economies and societies, with perceptive, even provocative insights into their implications." ―Vikas Datta, Business Standard

"Timely and thoughtful . . . A clear-eyed lament of liberalism's decline, and America stepping back and turning inward." American Conservative

"Fantastic. I recommend that everyone buys it." ―James Pethokoukis, American Enterprise Institute
