Amazon has the Kindle edition of EveryDayCook by Alton Brown on sale for $1.99
4.6 stars in 347 customer reviews

Also available on Google Play for those with survey credits:

https://play.google.com/store/boo...ZbCwAAQBA J

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • With 101 recipes for home chefs of all abilities, this cookbook makes a perfect graduation gift for those facing the real world (and feeding themselves) for the first time.

My name is Alton Brown, and I wrote this book. It's my first in a few years because I've been a little busy with TV stuff and interwebs stuff and live stage show stuff. Sure, I've been cooking, but it's been mostly to feed myself and people in my immediate vicinity—which is really what a cook is supposed to do, right? Well, one day I was sitting around trying to organize my recipes, and I realized that I should put them into a personal collection. One thing led to another, and here's EveryDayCook. There's still plenty of science and hopefully some humor in here (my agent says that's my "wheelhouse"), but unlike in my other books, a lot of attention went into the photos, which were all taken on my iPhone (take that, Instagram) and are suitable for framing

So let's review: 101 recipes with mouthwatering photos, a plethora of useful insights on methods, tools, and ingredients all written by an "award-winning and influential educator and tastemaker." That last part is from the PR office. Real people don't talk like that.

Description of Deadly Class:

It's 1987. Marcus Lopez hates school. His grades suck. He has no money. The jocks are hassling his friends. He can't focus in class, thanks to his mind constantly drifting to the stunning girl in the front row and the Dag Nasty show he has tickets to. But the jocks are the children of Joseph Stalin's top assassin, the teachers are members of an ancient league of assassins, the class he's failing is "Dismemberment 101," and his crush, a member of the most notorious crime syndicate in Japan, has a double-digit body count. Welcome to the most brutal high school on Earth, where the world's top crime families send the next generation of assassins to be trained. Murder is an art. Killing is a craft. At King's Dominion High School for the Deadly Arts, the dagger in your back isn't always metaphorical, nor is your fellow classmates' poison. Join writer RICK REMENDER with rising star WESLEY CRAIG (Batman) and legendary colorist LEE LOUGHRIDGE (Fear Agent) to reminisce about the mid-1980s underground through the eyes of the most damaged and dangerous teenagers on Earth.

Amazon and Google Play have the eBook version of Franklin Barbecue by Aaron Franklin on sale for $2.99

https://play.google.com/store/boo...udBAAAQBA J

4.7 stars in 1,433 customer reviews on Amazon

I personally have this book and cannot recommend it enough - a no-brainer at this slick price. The book is 80% smoking technique and philosophy and only 20% recipes at the end. It includes an impressive scope of knowledge and, while you may not actually build your own smokers, he's got that covered too.

If you re an amateur or seasoned smoker, buy this book.
If you've never tried smoking but want to, buy this book
If you want to know why barbecue <> grilling, buy this book.
If you like eating barbecue..... look, just buy this book!

A complete meat and brisket-cooking education from the country's most celebrated pitmaster and owner of the wildly popular Austin restaurant Franklin Barbecue.

When Aaron Franklin and his wife, Stacy, opened up a small barbecue trailer on the side of an Austin, Texas, interstate in 2009, they had no idea what they'd gotten themselves into. Today, Franklin Barbecue has grown into the most popular, critically lauded, and obsessed-over barbecue joint in the country (if not the world)—and Franklin is the winner of every major barbecue award there is.

In this much-anticipated debut, Franklin and coauthor Jordan Mackay unlock the secrets behind truly great barbecue, and share years' worth of hard-won knowledge. Franklin Barbecue is a definitive resource for the backyard pitmaster, with chapters dedicated to building or customizing your own smoker; finding and curing the right wood; creating and tending perfect fires; sourcing top-quality meat; and of course, cooking mind-blowing, ridiculously delicious barbecue, better than you ever thought possible.

"Aaron Franklin makes the finest barbecue I've ever had, barbecue worth waiting for. His work and his words express a truly rare level of commitment and expertise. With Franklin Barbecue , he shares it all—in a book that, fortunately, you don't have to wait for."
— Anthony Bourdain

"I used to think Aaron Franklin was a genius: There was his rise from backyard dabbler to king of Texas pitmasters; his mind-altering brisket that made normally rational people (myself included) wait hours for the chance to eat it; and his insistence that game-changing barbecue doesn't come from miracles but rather elbow grease. Then he wrote this book and gave all his secrets away. Now everyone—from me to you to your neighbor who can't grill a chicken breast—will be able to make award-winning barbecue. He's not a genius anymore; he's a god."
— Andrew Knowlton, restaurant and drinks editor, Bon Appétit

"The most refreshing barbecue book to come along yet. Rather than preaching about 'one true way,' Aaron Franklin guides you through all the wood and smoke so that you can find your own style. And instead of just listing ingredients and rattling off generic recipes, these pages tell the story of a place and a barbecue tradition steeped in history. This isn't just a book about barbecue;
this book is Central Texas barbecue."
— Daniel Vaughn, barbecue editor, Texas Monthly , and author of The Prophets of Smoked Meat

"Pure genius! Aaron Franklin has distilled years' worth of barbecue knowledge into this book. In it, he exposes the sacred insights of a top pitmaster—information that can otherwise only be learned from long nights spent staring at a fire, shovel in hand, constantly prodding and pinching your meat to figure out that 'just perfect' point of doneness. This book is a game changer: read it, and your barbecue will improve overnight!"
— Adam Perry Lang, chef, restaurateur, and author of Serious Barbecue

"A complete meat-and brisket-cooking education from the country's most celebrated pitmaster. More than just a recipe book, this is a master course in the fine art of meat smoking, Texas-style."
— Library Journal

He's never broken pattern…until now.

A girl has already gone missing in upstate New York when a second one is kidnapped—a blonde. The killer's MO has changed, sending Clarke back to the drawing board. The closer she gets to the truth, the deeper she's drawn into an inescapable trap made just for Clarke. Whatever Cross's ultimate game is, it ends with her.

A rising star at a preeminent political lobbying firm, Dag Calhoun represents the world's most powerful technology and energy executives. But when a close brush with death reveals that the influence he wields makes him a target, impossible cracks appear in his perfect, richly appointed life.

Like everyone else, Dag relies on his digital feed for everything—a feed that is as personal as it is pervasive, and may not be as private as it seems. As he struggles to make sense of the dark forces closing in on him, he discovers that activists are hijacking the feed to manipulate markets and governments. Going public would destroy everything he's worked so hard to build, but it's not just Dag's life on the line—a shadow war is coming, one that will secure humanity's future or doom the planet to climate catastrophe. Ultimately, Dag must decide the price he's willing to pay to change the world.

Biography : An American Princess: The Many Lives of Allene Tew [ amazon.com ]

Born to a pioneering family in Upstate New York in the late 1800s, Allene Tew was beautiful, impetuous, and frustrated by the confines of her small hometown. At eighteen, she met Tod Hostetter at a local dance, having no idea that the mercurial charmer she would impulsively wed was heir to one of the wealthiest families in America. But when he died twelve years later, Allene packed her bags for New York City. Never once did she look back.

From the vantage point of the American upper class, Allene embodied the tumultuous Gilded Age. Over the course of four more marriages, she weathered personal tragedies during World War I and the catastrophic financial reversals of the crash of 1929. From the castles and châteaus of Europe, she witnessed the Russian Revolution and became a princess. And from the hopes of a young girl from Jamestown, New York, Allene Tew would become the epitome of both a pursuer and survivor of the American Dream.

Historical Mystery : The Air Raid Killer (Max Heller, Dresden Detective Book 1) [ amazon.com ]

In the final days of the Third Reich, with the historic city of Dresden on the brink of destruction, terrifying rumors spread about the Fright Man, a demonic killer who exploited the cover of a nighttime air raid siren to mutilate and kill a young nurse. Just as seasoned detective Max Heller begins investigating, the Fright Man kills again…

The investigation seems hopeless. Desperate refugees flood the streets, all of Heller's resources are depleted, and his new boss is a ruthless SS officer. And like so many others, Heller and his wife, urlhasbeenblocked, survive on meager rations while fearing for the lives of their sons at the front. But as tensions mount and enemy firebombs decimate the city, dangerous new clues come to light—and the determined Heller pursues a violent and twisting path to unmask a monster.

Memoir : Monsoon Mansion: A Memoir [ amazon.com ]

Cinelle Barnes was barely three years old when her family moved into Mansion Royale, a stately ten-bedroom home in the Philippines. Filled with her mother's opulent social aspirations and the gloriously excessive evidence of her father's self-made success, it was a girl's storybook playland. But when a monsoon hits, her father leaves, and her mother's terrible lover takes the reins, Cinelle's fantastical childhood turns toward tyranny she could never have imagined. Formerly a home worthy of magazines and lavish parties, Mansion Royale becomes a dangerous shell of the splendid palace it had once been.

In this remarkable ode to survival, Cinelle creates something magical out of her truth—underscored by her complicated relationship with her mother. Through a tangle of tragedy and betrayal emerges a revelatory journey of perseverance and strength, of grit and beauty, and of coming to terms with the price of family—and what it takes to grow up.

Note: You must be logged in to your Audible account to see these prices. Also note that the Audible reviews for the narrator are not good.

There are 2 versions of Wool on Audible — "Wool Omnibus Edition (Wool 1 - 5)", collecting books 1-5, for $16.16 (or $7.49 if you also buy the Kindle Edition); and "Wool (Silo, #1; Wool, #1-5)", also apparently collecting books 1-5, for $1.99 if you buy the Kindle Edition. https://mobile.audible. com/pd/Sci...B00C7R2NQ 8 . If you follow the Audible link to buy the Kindle Edition of "Wool (Silo, #1; Wool, #1-5)" on Amazon, it takes you to Wool #1 on Amazon — the first book of the series that is 58 pages and is free. Buy that free book and add the Audible version to your purchase for $1.99. That will add "Wool (Silo, #1; Wool, #1-5)" to your Audible library. That Audible book says it has all 5 books, and the narration is over 17 hours - like the "Omnibus Edition". I haven't listened to the whole book yet, but it contains 83 chapters and starts by saying you are listening to "Wool Omnibus Edition", so this appears to get you all of Wool on Audible for $1.99.

I enjoyed the first one in this series, and got an alert from eReaderIQ for the second in this series. First found it here on Slickdeals, so I thought I'd give back.

This is the sequel to the New York Times bestselling WOOL series. It combines the three Shift books (First Shift, Second Shift, and Third Shift) into a single e-book in order to save the reader a few bucks. The saga concludes with DUST, which will be available in late 2013.

Reading Order:

In 2007, the Center for Automation in Nanobiotech (CAN) outlined the hardware and software platform that would one day allow robots smaller than human cells to make medical diagnoses, conduct repairs, and even self-propagate.

In the same year, the CBS network re-aired a program about the effects of propranolol on sufferers of extreme trauma. A simple pill, it had been discovered, could wipe out the memory of any traumatic event.

At almost the same moment in humanity's broad history, mankind had discovered the means for bringing about its utter downfall. And the ability to forget it ever happened.

Amazon has the Kindle edition of the cookbook Koreatown by Hong Deuki on sale for $1.99

We own this book and definitely recommend it (even if I am a little biased Peace Peace )

4.6 stars in 96 customer reviews

"Deuki Hong and Matt Rodbard have given us a deep and important look at the people, places and cuisine that are reshaping what we want for dinner. Koreatown thrills with flavors that will change your life." -- Anthony Bourdain

"Koreatown is not a place. It's an energy, an attitude, a painstaking stew of spice and frugality and brutally honest flavors. For the first time, here's a book that captures all of its electricity and mystery in a voice that is both vibrant and respectful." -- Edward Lee, chef and author of Smoke and Pickles

"Eating Korean food is the best legal high in the world and Koreatown is the gateway drug you need!" -- Gary Shteyngart, author of The Russian Debutante's Handbook and Little Failure: A Memoir

"The food of Korea is complex, and becomes fully realized in this amazing new book by Deuki Hong and Matt Rodbard. With a thrilling new voice and original ideas, this is not the same boring "ethnic eats explainer" that is often used as an excuse to profile a country's cuisine. I couldn't put it down, and can't wait to start cooking from these pages. Bibimbap for the win!" -- Andrew Zimmern, author and television host

"Deuki Hong is making great Korean food, and not just for Koreans." -- David Chang Chef/Founder of Momofuku

"Thanks to this cookbook, I can finally make all the dishes at home that I obsess over when I visit Koreatown. It's amazing to have all these mysteriously delicious recipes in one place." -- Sean Brock, chef and author of Heritage

Unwrap the world of Korean-American food through a guide demystifying the cuisine of fire and fermentation ." -- The New York Times

"A great book whether you're new to Korean food or looking for recipes for old favorites, Koreatown will have you running to your local Asian grocery to stock up on rice cakes, gochujang, and kimchi. Or, better yet, making your own kimchi from scratch." — Epicurious

"The evangelists Korean food needs to become the next big cuisine." Tasting Table

"The last Korean cookbook that you will ever need." Vice

"In the burgeoning genre of cookbooks written as much to be read as to be cooked from, Koreatown paints a portrait of America's vibrant Korean-American communities and invites a broad audience to experiment with this style of cooking." Eater

"Korean food is built on bold flavors: spicy pickled vegetables, sweet, smoky meats and pungent, salty stews. That can be a little intimidating for some American diners. But the authors of Koreatown have changed that." NPR "Morning Edition"

"A detailed and sharply written collection that includes nearly 100 recipes, as well as photos, short essays, and interviews that explore various K-towns across the U.S." -- Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Kindle edition

4.8 / 5 stars, 1400+ reviews

A former international hostage negotiator for the FBI offers a new, field-tested approach to high-stakes negotiations—whether in the boardroom or at home.

After a stint policing the rough streets of Kansas City, Missouri, Chris Voss joined the FBI, where his career as a hostage negotiator brought him face-to-face with a range of criminals, including bank robbers and terrorists. Reaching the pinnacle of his profession, he became the FBI's lead international kidnapping negotiator. Never Split the Difference takes you inside the world of high-stakes negotiations and into Voss's head, revealing the skills that helped him and his colleagues succeed where it mattered most: saving lives. In this practical guide, he shares the nine effective principles—counterintuitive tactics and strategies—you too can use to become more persuasive in both your professional and personal life.

Life is a series of negotiations you should be prepared for: buying a car, negotiating a salary, buying a home, renegotiating rent, deliberating with your partner. Taking emotional intelligence and intuition to the next level, Never Split the Difference gives you the competitive edge in any discussion.

About six months ago, I noticed that many good books are often marked down on Amazon.com with free shipping via prime. Our local library and community organizations are often in great need of good books. This month mostly children's books I picked up, but I don't typically care as long as it looks like a good book. I started using my Amazon promotional credits from my 5% Amazon store card to buy a bunch of these marked down books each month, and donate them to our local community organizations.

I figure maybe others may be interested in these books as well, since they are significantly marked down. Be aware that many of these go fast, so may go in and out of stock quickly, or price may fluctuate. Prices and links listed here are those as of my posting. I may do this post monthly, if people are interested. The below are ones I have bought this month.

Amazon continues to offer classic Sci-Fi titles on Kindle at slick prices. This time they have Double Star by Robert Heinlein on sale for $2.99 - sold by Amazon so No Rush Shipping credits WILL apply Applause

This was his first Hugo award winning novel and great for both old and new readers alike

https://www.amazon.com/Double-Sta...B016TSE6O W

Many of Heinlein's fans consider the novels he wrote in the fifties amongst the author's strongest work; when he was at the peak of his talents. Double Star is considered by many to be the finest of his titles. Brian Aldiss called it his "most enjoyable novel."

Whether it is the simplicity of a lively tale, the complexity of the situation, or the depth of characterization, the book has developed a loyal following. It also won Heinlein his first Hugo.

The story revolves around Lawrence Smith—also known as "Lorenzo the Great"—a down-and-out actor wasting the remainder of his life in bars.

When he encounters a space-pilot who offers him a drink, before he knows what is going on, he is on Mars involved in a deep conspiracy with global consequences. He is given a mission where failure would not only mean his own death, it would almost certainly mean an all-out planetary war.

"Heinlein's novels of the 1940s and 50s shaped every single science fiction writer of my generation and everyone currently writing science fiction. Or making science fiction movies ... and Double Star is an excellent example of all the reasons why."—Connie Willis

Amazon has the Kindle edition of Good Clean Fun: Misadventures in Sawdust at Offerman Woodshop by Nick Offerman for $1.99

" Good Clean Fun has helped me discover new ways to have fun in the shop...If Offerman's goal is to expose a wider audience to the world of woodworking, he's hit the nail on the head. The guidance is sound and presented in a much more entertaining manner than you'll encounter in other woodworking books. Good Clean Fun may be the first woodworking book that's actually fun to read." —Woodcraft Magazine

"Offerman offers detailed projects, shop tips, and tricks, wider reflections on his career and craftsmanship...Offerman really loves wood. By the time you're finished, you will too." —Popular Mechanics

"Part memoir...part technical guide (which provides instructions on how to build fine pieces down to the very inch), and part spiritual guide (there's zen-like life lessons to take away from crafting something with your hands)." —Esquire

"This book is sure to fit nicely in your library and next to you, in your wood shop, whether you are just picking up a new hobby or looking to dive into a career of carving and turning wood."— Design*Sponge

"A witty woodworking tutorial." —Country Living

"Woodworking craftsmanship cannot get more fun than this."— BookPage

Nestled among the glitz and glitter of Tinseltown is a testament to American elbow grease and an honest-to-god hard day's work: Offerman Woodshop. Captained by hirsute woodworker, actor, comedian, and writer Nick Offerman, the shop produces not only fine handcrafted furniture, but also fun stuff—kazoos, baseball bats, ukuleles, mustache combs, even cedar-strip canoes.

Now Nick and his ragtag crew of champions want to share their experience of working at the Woodshop, tell you all about their passion for the discipline of woodworking, and teach you how to make a handful of their most popular projects along the way. This book takes readers behind the scenes of the woodshop, both inspiring and teaching them to make their own projects and besotting them with the infectious spirit behind the shop and its complement of dusty wood-elves.

In these pages you will find a variety of projects for every skill level, with personal, easy-to-follow instructions by the OWS woodworkers themselves; and, what's more, this tutelage is augmented by mouth-watering color photos (Nick calls it "wood porn"). You will also find writings by Nick, offering recipes for both comestibles and mirth, humorous essays, odes to his own woodworking heroes, insights into the ethos of woodworking in modern America, and other assorted tomfoolery.

Whether you've been working in your own shop for years, or if holding this stack of compressed wood pulp is as close as you've ever come to milling lumber, or even if you just love Nick Offerman's brand of bucolic yet worldly wisdom, you'll find Good Clean Fun full of useful, illuminating, and entertaining information.
